Jak and Jyla

In this Himalayan reimagining of the old nursery rhyme, Jak Tsang (Jack) and Jyla Lhasa (Jill) are meant to be sworn enemies. Hailing from different peoples, they meet unexpectedly on the trail to Paro Temple, In search of the Elixir of Life.

Character Interactions

After accidentally bumping into one another, and realizing they need each other's help, the two create an odd pairing as they traverse the terrors of the Himalayas together. They discover an unexpected connection, and Jyla is forced to decide between riches and fame while Jak is forced to choose between his new connection to Jyla and the trust of his people. They both find ways to help eachother grow while on the journey.

Jyla Exploration

Jyla is a rabble rouser from a small tribe of traveling Mongol Thieves. She is enlisted to find the elixir by her chieftain in order to repay her debts to the tribe. She has a huge disregard for others feelings and belongings. It takes all of her emotional energy to adhere to this task. She feels as though it is completely unnecessary, and the tribe owes her. Her journey will allow her to open her eyes to others feelings and needs.

Jak Exploration

Jak is a former monk recruited by his temple leaders to find the elixir in order to protect all living things, and prevent the elixir from getting into the wrong hands. He has a soft, nervous heart, but could not bring himself to stay away from his mother and younger sister in order to live at the temple. His indecision is his greatest flaw and it haunts him. He hopes his journey for the elixir proves to his temple leaders and family that he is strong enough to protect his village.

Jyla Costume Exploration

Jyla's costumes are meant to compliment her sharp, abrupt personality and adventurous spirit. Whether she be in traditional Nepalese garb, or Mongolian inspired pieces.

Cultural Callouts

Jak is wearing mostly traditional Tibetan clothing, with nods to his earlier life as a monk. Men wore either the traditional hat or flat-topped "Toortsog". Jak is also wearing gutals or gutuls, which are leather boots that are a traditional footwear of Mongolia and Tibet. Jyla is wearing traditional mongol foot wraps for climbing, as well as ancient Chinese inspired waist pieces. Her hairstyle is mostly is traditional "Queue" braid. She keeps the top of her head exposed, Which is masculine.
