The cleaning fairy
(senior Thesis)

![]() This was the first drawing of these characters I ever made. I always had the idea of a tidy monster coming up from under a girls bed. I thought it would be sweet if they became friends. I showed this image at the first pitch meeting for senior thesis. | ![]() During class I began to doodle what the characters might be like, how messy is this little girl? How old is she? Is she shy or rowdy? | ![]() I really wanted to capture what an interaction between these two characters might look like. How uptight is the monster Harold? Does he look tired or defeated? |
---|---|---|
![]() I loved the idea of a knits and vests for Harold, in order to display his tidiness. I wanted him at some point to be dressed like a fairy to help Benni Clean up her room, but I wasn't sure how I was going to go about that. | ![]() I wasn't sure if I wanted Harold to be much bigger than Benni, or maybe the same size? Does he have to be small to fit under the bed? Or is it a "magic" space. I experimented with sizes and textures, different animal attributes. | ![]() There was a brief period of sketches where Benni had very skinny "story book" Ink legs. I liked the idea of a storybook vibe. |
![]() Once I started to get to know Benni while I was drawing her, I discovered slowly what she would and wouldn't do and what her motivations are. She's the type of girl who would wear a tutu to flag football. | ![]() I did quite a few variations of Harold, and some of them were horrific. My classmates created an audible gasp of creeped-out-ness when the middle drawing here was shown. Too scary! | ![]() |
![]() I tried drawing Benni in a semi-3 dimensional way. three quarter views, to see if I liked the way she felt in space. | ![]() Once I decided I liked the way she looked in physical space I went back over the drawings and created some more realistic clothing options for her. I still wasn't sure if I was going to go "dr. Suess-ey" or not. | ![]() |
![]() | ![]() I had to do designs for the clothing that was going to be on Benni's floor, whether or not the audience would see it. They needed to be unique and messy in their own right before they were thrown all over the floor. | ![]() Benni's Room needed to feel whimsical, and un-afraid. I combined my knowledge of interior space and a sense of soft romantic color to really sell the idea of Benni's personality. |
![]() The props for Harold's space under the bed needed to be sharp, precise, but also a lil funky. Because he's a monster, and I'd like to think there is a completely different world going on under there. | ![]() After settling on some Silhouettes I was able to do some preliminary paintings of the characters to try and understand their weight and texture better. After the paintings were approved I was allowed to make any modifications and then start modeling the characters in Z-Brush. | ![]() |
